I have known Plotnikov since my childhood. Thanks to the pictures of the Soviet actors and actresses, and Anastasia Vertinskaya in particular. And the first photographer I thought about while preparing for portrait assignment was Plotnikov.
Valery Plotnikov was among the best Soviet photographers. He made portraits of well-known people in the former USSR. This privilige in the Soviet Union was given only to the best among the best.
Most of his major works were done during 1980s, 1990s. At that time the digital photography didn't exist. The process of making photoes was much more difficult. Plotnikov is very creative for that time. What I like in his portraits is that he tries to create the appropriate atmosphere for his characters and as a result his pictures are as scenes from movies.
He has plenty of exhibitions, which were mostly held in Russia and East European countries. The last exhibition of his works, including experiments in digital photography, was in St Petersburg to celebrate his 60 anniversary.
